How should recent/autocomplete lists be stored

Ok, here's how I intend autocomplete to work:

1) Store the last 10 queries run against a particular connection string.
2) Use the autocomplete feature of the textbox to fill in the remaining part of the query.

The question is, how should I store the list of auto complete items? I've tried the following:

- Storing in the user preferences... this doesn't seem to run too well under VS 2005. The preferences file gets created ok, but doesn't seem to be read again... ever.

- Storing in a file. Not great because of sharing problems when multiple instances of VS2005 is open.

- Storing in the registry. Same problems as with storing in a file, plus it's pretty old school.
